Cat puts Japan rail firm on track
![]() A loss-making Japanese railway company is back on track thanks to the popularity of a stray cat. Wearing a black cap and posing for photos with passengers, Tama is credited with boosting Wakayama Electric Railway's revenue by 10%. The firm had to axe all staff at Kishi station in western Japan two years ago. But Tama stuck by her post and was rewarded with promotion to station manager. The pet mascot even has her own office, a former ticket booth. The feline, who was born and raised at the station in the city of Kinokawa, Wakayama prefecture, is living proof of the Japanese belief that cats are good luck. "She never complains, even though passengers touch her all over the place. She is an amazing cat. She has patience and charisma. She is the perfect station master," said Yoshiko Yamaki, a spokeswoman for the rail company. The nine-year-old - who receives cat food in lieu of a salary - won national stardom last year when the firm formally appointed her as "station master". Since then passengers have been gradually returning, recently rising 10% to about 2.1 million a year. The cat has spawned a range of popular merchandise, including a picture book called: "Diary of Tama, the Station Master." -------------------- If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

Meet Cinderella. Mud phobia pig gets its own boots A piglet scared of wallowing in mud has overcome its fears with the help of some Wellington boots. ![]() Six-week-old Cinders appears to suffer from mysophobia, a fear of dirt, after refusing to join her siblings as they splashed around in the mud. Owner Andrew Keeble from Thirsk, North Yorks, said his daughter Ellie, 12, suggested kitting her out in the tiny footwear which had been on a key ring. "Lo and behold they fitted her like a glove," Mr Keeble said. "She's scared of mud, but her brothers and sisters are quite happy in it. "We've never come across this before. They are born really to go and explore, but she never really liked going in the mud." Mr Keeble and wife Debbie, both 42, run a sausage company and keep about 200 pigs on their 1,000-acre farm. But the father-of-four said there was no chance that Cinders would be slaughtered. "She's more of a pet really now and she's going to live a very long and happy life," he said. The young saddleback has been chosen by the couple as a mascot for their campaign to raise money for the Farm Crisis Network, which supports struggling farmers. -------------------- If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

Rejected newborn red panda adopted by cat
![]() AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A newborn red panda rejected by its mother in Amsterdam's Artis zoo has been adopted by a domestic cat, the zoo said Friday. The cat is nursing the red panda, currently about the size of a kitten, along with her own four kittens, the zoo said. The red panda was born on June 30 and rejected by its mother soon afterwards. Red pandas look like raccoons and when fully grown are slightly larger than a domestic cat -- substantially smaller than the black and white giant panda. "They are skilful climbers that, when not foraging on the ground, spend most of their time in the trees curled up with their long, bushy tails wrapped around their heads," the World Wildlife Fund conservation charity said on its website -------------------- If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

A fox has been unmasked as the mystery thief of more than 100 shoes in the small western German town of Foehren, authorities said Friday.
A forest worker stumbled upon shoes strewn near the fox's den and found a trove of footwear down the hole which had recently been stolen overnight from outside locals' front doors. "There was everything from ladies' shoes to trainers," said a local police spokesman. "We've found between 110 and 120 so far. It seems a vixen stole them for her cubs to play with." Although many were missing laces, the shoes were in good condition and their owners were delighted to reclaim them, he said, adding that no reprisals were planned against the culprit. -------------------- If you judge people, you have no time to love them.
